Held Back

For a long time i've known I wanted to write a book at some point in my life. For a shorter time, but still a distinct amount of time, i've bounced around some ideas of what kind of book I might want to write.

What I can't figure out, is why I keep holding myself back. A couple of the things I would enjoy researching and writing about, I could have made a good chunk of headway on before returning back to school. Even at school, I could have some better filing system to organize my thoughts on some of those subjects I'm most excited about, yet the motivation is lacking.

Part of it is my pure laziness. Scratch that, all of it is my pure laziness.

What do I need to have happen to motivate me?

A book starts with an idea, then leads to a book. So what are some of your ideas that will pave the way for your book?

Will your book be youth ministry focused? Do you got connections with some publishers?

I don't think that my book will be youth ministry focused. I also doubt that it will be academic in nature.

The two main ideas that run in my head constantly are below:

1. The importance of "naming" in the Bible and today. This "idea" is primarily about the identity we inherit from God (seen obviously in name changes in the Bible) that we also have today. Though today, the naming (read: identity statements about us since our names have just become labels) often takes place in statements like "you are stupid, fat, ugly, etc..." and leave us believing too many things about ourselves that aren't true. The Bible speaks much more truth about what our "name" is and the way we should live that out.

2. The second idea comes from my love for storytelling. However, I hate trying to make up stories. It would be a book in similar style to those of Donald Miller's Blue Like Jazz where stories from life and observation would be told, with no building of purpose or desired knowledge to be attained at the end, but filled with nuggets of truth throuhout that testify to the God who is still actively at work in reclaiming all people to himself.
