After 26 pages of Hebrew, 8 hours of class, and 3 more bottles of Pepsi.
I have finally wound down. I took about a 1 and a half hour nap earlier, but am ready for bed again now.
Enjoy your Friday's, I'll sleep mine away.
My life is lived within parenthesis. My life is not about me, though it may contain some interesting points. The main point is far outside myself and rests with my God/Savior. I seek to tell His story in a different way, a way that you'll understand, a way that will move you, and in a way that draws you into relationship with the Hero of the story.

Pumped Full of Caffeine
My most extensive project of Seminary thus far is due tomorrow afternoon at 1:00.
How hard could it be. Do Hebrew work on Psalm 29, and then any other passage (within the realm of 1 Samuel through Song of Solomon) that you choose.
Psalm 29 is 11 verses. I chose my second passage as Psalm 15 because it is only 5 verses.
Unfortunately "Do Hebrew work" is the most research I've ever had to do. Basically I have to answer every syntax, grammar, word usage, word function, metaphoric usage, context question imaginable. It's been loads of fun.
I'm pumped full of caffeine right now to make it through the night and finish the project. At 2:15 I even received a call from a classmate asking for some assistance. My Bibleworks software allows me to do some of the searches in matters of seconds that it would take hours to do in book form, so I gladly told a classmate he could call me if he needed a search done on the passage he chose, and I would e-mail him the results.
It's been a fun night. I'll sleep well tomorrow night.

Post 617
I've officially reached Post number 617. I don't know why I chose this as a momentous number, but I did.
On that note, I'm guessing that attempting to complete on of Tiger Woods putting drills would take me at least 617 attempts.
One of his drills involves making 100 4 foot putts using just his left hand. Then 100 using just his right hand. Then 100 using both hands. Oh, and by the way, if he misses, the count starts over.
He has to succesfully make 300 putts in a row to finish his four foot putting drill.
That would easily take me 617 tries.
Happy post 617.

Jenny Is Acting Childish
It is amazing sometimes what starting to feel better will do to a person.
First, she wants a meatball sub. Subway will likely get her business during the lunch hour tomorrow. She has my blessing for that expendeture. For all I care, she can go buy herself an entire Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake for lunch tomorrow if that will make her happy. She deserves it.
She's acting childish now that she is regaining some strength. She has transformed from the mild mannered protector who wouldn't let me near her, in fear that I might get sick, to the child who wants to play, and play with someone else.
She is no longer content to sit by herself. She is excited for companionship again.
I know what a daughter of ours would act like as I watch her in these times.
She thinks that is funny.

Jenny Has the Flu
Because of this, I'm quaranteened off from section of the house.
She has marked her territory with plad patterened sheets though, so it is clear where I am not supposed to go.
Pray for her. She isn't having a good time.

I Finally Remembered
I always remembered that I still had a question to answer whenever I wasn't ready to blog. Then, I'd sit down to blog and forget about it.
Unfortunately, my brain shut off half an hour ago.
So.... I'll post this question for discussion.
Matty asked:
I want to know more about Samson. Specifically, I'd like to hear your comments about why you think God empowered Samson and allowed him to use personal revenge as motivation for doing God's work.

Tomorrow is Coming
I was busy getting all of my assignments completed for class tomorrow. Throughout the day, I continued to remind myself that tomorrow will come soon. Such a thought was encouraging to me.
Tomorrow I have to preach my first message for my preaching class. It has simply been too long since I preached a message.
I'm giddy like a schoolkid.

Finding Life Busy
The first week back from a two week reading break at school is usually busy. This week is no exception.
I had a paper due in my first class monday, and a presentation in my second.
I had a paper due tonight.
I have a sermon to preach on Thursday, and two Hebrew quizes to study for that appear later that afternoon.
On top of it all, I was informed via e-mail last night that the teacher of the class I'm the TA for wasn't going to make it to class today and I'd have to deal with that on my own.
Fortunately, I've been productive enough in spurts to still allow me decent times of sleep.

Great Downfalls
I struggle most with pride. It is at the heart of most sins I commit.
In an effort to battle this, i've been doing lots of study on humility.
St. Benedicts twelve stages of humility have been enlightening to me.
Here they are:
The first step towards humility is fear of God and remembrance of Him in all things that we do.
Secondly, the struggler must not love to do his own will, but follow instead the example of the Saviour: "I have come not to do My own will, but the will of Him Who sent Me."
We must be obedient to God and His Church, in all things great and small.
The struggler must be patient, enduring everything that comes to him.
We must not hide our sins, but eagerly confess them.
One who seeks humility must be content with the poorest and worst of everything,
We must consider ourselves as lower than anyone else.
We should not seek to be "different" from others; we should do only what is needful, following the example of the saints.
The humble man learns to restrain his tongue.
We must be serious-minded, not frivolous or silly.
Our words to others should be few, and covered with gentleness.
Real humility appears first in the heart; then it shows itself in our outward behaviour, whether we are working or resting.
I can't say where I am on this ladder, but I hope to progress further.

We Already Knew
While in Kentucky for the funeral this weekend, we also visited some other family members. One such place was the nursing home where my mom's father is staying. While he was getting ready for bed, many of us headed into the hallway to wait, and some of the workers became curious who this group might be.
After investigating and finding the friendly faces they knew, they were introduced to us all.
One such worker continued:
"Who married her?"
"I did." I responded.
"You've done well, she's gorgeous."
"Trust me, I'm well aware that I married up."
At this point, Jenny began blushing. It was very amusing to all of us. Conversation continued like this until we all began walking out of the nursing home.
The worker continued to compliment Jenny on her looks, and me for picking such a good one. When she realized she'd been going on about it for so long she stated:
"Don't worry, I'm not gay or anything, I'm married to, but just look at her."
I won't forget this statement. I won't let Jenny either.
It took Jenny a while to return to her normal shade, but eventually we all had a good laugh at the situation.

More Writers
Now that the writers' strike is over, I'm not the only one writing daily anymore.
I'm most looking forward to new episodes of How I Met Your Mother and Criminal Minds.
Are there any shows you are super excited to hear will be making new episodes again?

Uncle John
My Uncle John passed away today. He had one of those unfortunate diseases that not only ends your life, but does so in a way where you become unrecognizable in the last days.
I don't think I'll remember him that way though.
I'll remember his vacations. Though I was only around on the vacations where their family was visiting ours, I saw a man that during those times was often excited and giving. That's the Uncle John I'll remember most often.
Pray most for his wife Melanie and daughter Sara. Their lives have seen more grief than anyone should. These are from the same side of my family that lost a father/grandfather just 6 months ago.

What is Power?

Jenny and I watched "Schindler's List" tonight. I had never seen it before. If you've never seen it, you should, it is a wonderfully haunting historical movie.
During the movie, Schindler is talking with Goeth about what it means to be powerful. Ultimately, Schindler espouses that power is "having every right to kill a person, and then pardoning them."
Nothing rang truer to the Grace of our God than this statement.

Matters of Worth
Anonymous stated:
Being a Christian, why do you think a person desires to be boo'ed (see your Feb 2 golf tournament blog from a couple days ago when you wrote ‘Professionals should get booed if they make a bad shot.’). I see boo'ing as a negative activity. As a Christian, we need to seek to be Christ-like, which includes supporting each other. Do you think Jesus would 'boo' others? How do you think Jesus would act in that golfing situation?
I think the "desires" in the first question was meant to mean "deserved" and will go under that assumption.
I would agree that as Christians, we should be supportive. From what I can tell though, I might disagree on what matters of life it is that we need support, and maybe a statement of the obvious given my previous post, I don't believe that golf shots are one of those areas we must support.
I don't view golf as a matter of worth. If someone is getting their identity from golf, they have bigger problems than my approval or disapproval of them. I would not want to encourage and support someone to get their identity from anything but Christ. Because of this, I place golf in the category of sport, game, activity, enjoyment. In doing so, I want it to be fun.
As someone becomes good enough to make their entire living playing golf, I feel that it is okay to add the pressure of them needing to play well. If they are going to make millions because of how well they hit a ball, i'm fine with them enduring the "boos" that come on one hole on tour if they hit a bad shot.
A different line of argument (than just that Christians should be supportive) that could be taken fecesiously is that Christians are to be honest. We shouldn't lie about if a shot was good or not. Jesus often pointed people to the truth of their actions, often more so because of their actions that were not good and shouldn't be supported than the ones that were worth encouraging.
I can't put Jesus in that specific situation though. I assume, if he was here today, he would have been watching Tiger win the tournament in Dubai, not the hole in Arizona where they boo bad shots.
Reactions and comments welcomed.

Too Many 50/50 decisions
Lately I've been experimenting with Minesweeper. I enjoy trying my luck at the expert level, but get frustrated when so many games come down to 50/50 decisions at some point.
I know I still have some other comments to respond to, but I was too frustrated playing Minesweeper to think about it right now.
That expert difficulty is stinkin hard. It is even harder if you accidently misclick on something you didn't mean to.

You asked for it...
"favorite childrens story or favorite cartoon characters when you were a kid (like disney or warner brothers, etc.) and why... "
I distinctly remember being read the book "Everyone Poops." Can't say it was my favorite though. Favorite cartoon characters were the Thundercats or the good G.I. Joe figures. Favorite Disney Character was always Goofy, because he made me laugh the most.
Favorite Warner Brothers character would have been the animaniacs. They sang the coolest songs.
Somewhere high on the list would have to be the kids from Duck Tales cartoon and Road Runner and the Coyote. Again for comic value. I was also nicknamed Road Runner at one of my schools because I was fast.
Favorite current cartoon character... Ralph Wiggum from The Simpsons.

The New Standard Of Envy
I'm looking forward to typing about the topics listed after yesterday's post. I'll get to them shortly.
However, today i'll be talking about my new standard of envy.
Between classes today, i made a trip to my local GolfSmith store. Something that was great for my afternoon, but bad for my thought life. I enjoyed hitting golf balls while there, as well as eying up the years new golf equipment.
My irons are the only clubs I have never replaced (actually them and my 5 wood) and would be the next clubs I would want to buy. Today, I found the set I would want.
So i'll continue to envy them, hoping to someday have the money to get them, but as I'm not working, that timeframe seems bleak.

Can't Think of a Topic
After posting the list of topics a little bit ago, I find that tonight, my brain can't find one to write about.
Ask or recommend away.
I'll probably avoid politics for at least a week :)

Babies, Giants, and a Tiger
There were three winners today.
Most notably, the Giants beat the formerly undefeated Patriots in the Superbowl. We were excited about this, as we had been rooting for the Patriots to lose for the last 8 weeks or so.
E-Trade wins my vote for best Superbowl commercials. They had two of them with a baby talking to a webcam about buying stocks and renting a clown. Very funny.
Lastly, Tiger Woods is still amazing. He started the day in 4th place in his tournament, 4 strokes behind the leader. He won by a stroke. Phenomenal.
Overall, this day gets an A+.

The Way Golf Should Be...
I watched a couple of hours of the FBR Golf Tournament on CBS today. This tournament is heading in the right direction because it understands the way golf should be, but often isn't.
Over 100,000 people were in attendance there today. The fun part though, isn't that they are the highest in attendance, it is what they do with the 16th hole of their golf course.
A 170 yard Par 3 hole is not normally the highlight of a course, unless it is an island green. This actual hole isn't thad daunting. That is, until you add the fans. They literally circle this hole with bleachers and box seats. Over 40,000 fans at the one hole. The fans stay quiet for the swing, but once contact is made, the cheers are enormous. Hit a bad shot, and you will get booed, regardless of who you are. Hit a good shot, you will be cheered.
The fans expect that anyone who makes a par or better will throw their ball into the sea of people. If this isn't instantanious, they will chant for it. 3 golfers tried and overthrew the bleachers. They got booed until they threw a second ball.
This is the way golf should be. Professionals should get booed if they make a bad shot. No-names should feel on top of the world when they hit a good one.
