I watched a couple of hours of the FBR Golf Tournament on CBS today. This tournament is heading in the right direction because it understands the way golf should be, but often isn't.
Over 100,000 people were in attendance there today. The fun part though, isn't that they are the highest in attendance, it is what they do with the 16th hole of their golf course.
A 170 yard Par 3 hole is not normally the highlight of a course, unless it is an island green. This actual hole isn't thad daunting. That is, until you add the fans. They literally circle this hole with bleachers and box seats. Over 40,000 fans at the one hole. The fans stay quiet for the swing, but once contact is made, the cheers are enormous. Hit a bad shot, and you will get booed, regardless of who you are. Hit a good shot, you will be cheered.
The fans expect that anyone who makes a par or better will throw their ball into the sea of people. If this isn't instantanious, they will chant for it. 3 golfers tried and overthrew the bleachers. They got booed until they threw a second ball.
This is the way golf should be. Professionals should get booed if they make a bad shot. No-names should feel on top of the world when they hit a good one.

I saw a little bit of that today and thought that that hole was really cool. As you said, the hole did not look difficult, but being completely surrounded by people would make it difficult. I can't wait to golf again.
