Penalties

North Dakota issued a death sentence today. Let's talk about the death penalty. Are you for or against it and why?

I find it interesting that you posted this because just moments before I read the feed on your post I was thinking about the ruling and trying to decide what I thought. I just don't know. I was reading an article in the Trib today about the decision that mentioned a pastor that was againast the death penalty when the act was originally committed but was now for it. He said he changed his mind because he learned from an FBI agent about offenders that purposely didn't commit their crimes in their states because they feared a death sentence if caught. That's a pretty good argument for being for the death penalty in my opinion--show offenders that this is not something that will be stood for. But then there is the whole question of whether taking another life when one life has already been lost is really the best idea. Does this agree with Scripture? I can think of passages that seem to say "no" and I can think of passages that would also say "yes." So I guess my conclusion is still that I don't know. I would probably state that I am in favor of the death penalty asked right out, but when it really comes down to whether or not I agree with it I am just not sure.

An interesting and emotional question. I used to be solidly for the death penalty believing that some crimes are so heinous, there is no way the criminal should be left to live. However, I'd give up death penalty sentences for life without parole if, the courts would quit letting people kill babies before they are born because they may be inconvenient to the mother, etc. No death penalty, no general abortion. Both are highly emotional issues with little chance of rational discussion among people of opposite feelings.
