No Interpretation

I like art. I like looking at art.

What I don't like is trying to interpret the story or message behind art. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, can't meaning be also. What if what a picture does inside me has nothing to do with the intention of the artist?

Tonight in class we were asked to discuss our interpretations of a painting that related to the church. It felt like a small group of people trying to find the answer behind a painting. Must there be an answer? Can't everyone's thoughts be true to themselves? If something was supposed to be clearly depicted, shouldn't it be clearly painted or sculpted?

I'm too logical sometimes for art that needs interpretation. That is what I have decided. Regardless, I enjoy that art, just not having to discuss it with people who "understand" art.
